1560–1700 Early-Modern Edinburgh
The Medieval era ended with the turmoil of the early-Modern period in the 16th century, when a religious reformation swept around Europe. This touched the lives of many Scots, with Protestant preacher John Knox pivotal in helping to chart Scotland's path. He lived for many years in today's Scottish Storytelling Centre, while preaching further up the Royal Mile, from the pulpit at St Giles' Cathedral.
In the 17th century religious friction placed another nearby church, Greyfriars Kirk, into the spotlight as a key place where Presbyterian Covenanters both stood their ground and were punished for doing so. This helped suspicion and underground networks flourish in this era, possibly explaining the intriguing Gilmerton Cove hideaway, one way or another.
