Portobello Beach
Edinburgh by the Sea
During fine weather Edinburgh's Portobello beach is a fun place to be. A promenade attracts strollers and dog-walkers, while the beach is full of children flying kites, building sandcastles and playing in the surf. It's usually too cold (and sometimes too polluted) to do much in the way of swimming.
The centre of the prom is dotted with a few tempting cafes and bars; the Espy, a hip pub and, yards away, the Beach House, a cafe with great cakes, are the best spots.
The northern end of the promenade, beyond the sandy beach, is the quietest and wildest section, and the best for shell collectors.
Turkish Baths
The beautifully restored part of a Victorian swimming pool, these Turkish Baths are run by Edinburgh Council as part of the Portobello Swim Centre. Inexpensive, but you need to book online in advance to use them.
