Seasons, Festivals & Events
There isn’t a bad time to visit Greece. Summers are hot, particularly in the cities, so most tourists–and locals–head to the Greek Islands to escape the heat of the concrete.
Climate
Greece has what’s known as a Mediterranean climate in that the summers are hot and dry, with mild and wet winters–especially in the Ionian Islands which makes the island chain so green.
For example, Northern Greece in the winter averages at 10-11 degrees C, often with snow with Athens averaging at 14 degrees, and the islands a balmy 16 degrees.
Summers see highs of between 28-32 degrees C, depending on where you are.
Bearing this in mind, depending on what activities you’re looking to take part in, winter time (Dec-Feb) offers good skiing opportunities in destinations such as Central Greece and Northern Greece, spring (Mar-May) and autumn (Sep-Nov) are perfect for city breaks if you’re wanting to walk up to the Acropolis of Athens, for example and spring and summer (Jun-Aug) perfect for island breaks and escaping the cities.
Festivals
Many Greek festivals are based around the Orthodox religion, or have a cultural base. Listed are some of the most popular.
