Skopelos
"Mamma Mia" island
Skopelos is known for its Mamma Mia fame. Mostly filmed here in 2007, despite its remoteness due to no airport on the island, Skopelos does draw in the crowds, especially from yachts and neighbouring Sporades islands.
Skopelos attracts families and couples with its romantic, unspoilt feel and the many beaches surrounded by pine forests. Note that there are no ‘organised’ beaches here ie: much in the way of facilities, offering the island a secluded feel and get away from it all destination.
Skopelos Town and Glossa are the two main towns of the island sitting atop a hill with sweeping views across the Aegean.
In the spring and autumn, take advantage of the many small footpaths by ambling or hiking through the woods to many of the small chapels dotted around the place or fans of Mamma Mia can hire a car and take themselves off to Kastani Beach in the south west of the island where many scenes were shot, or the chapel of Agios Ioannis Kastri, sitting atop a rock and no longer in use hence open to visitors.
Fly to the nearby island of Skiathos where many European charters fly to in the summer months, or several daily connections from Athens.
Take a ferry from Skiathos to Skopelos.
Ferries depart for Skopelos from Agios Konstantinos port and from Volos Town on the mainland.
During the summer there are some extra ferry routes to Skopelos from Kymi on Evia Island.
There aren’t direct ferry routes to Skopelos from Athens, but you can take a public bus to any of the mainland ports mentioned here.
