National Gardens
Including the Zappion Gardens
The National Gardens is a public park of 38 acres right next to Syntagma Square and was commissioned by Queen Amalia to be built–completed in 1840 and opened to the public in 1920.
It’s a cool oasis and respite from the concrete jungle of Athens for tourists and Athenians alike, especially at weekends. There’s a duck pond with several species of duck, a small zoo and many botanical plants to be seen. You’ll also find a botanical museum and small children’s library hidden amongst the many pathways.
Popular for jogging or just taking a stroll with the family.
Take a break in Aegli Cafe where you can have lunch or just relax with a frappe coffee.
Hours: Sunrise to sunset
Transport: Nearest Metro is Syntagma on the blue line.
Exit the metro and turn right along Vasilissis Amalias Avenue until you come to the main gate.
The National Gardens is also walking distance from Monastiraki up Ermou Street and the Acropolis of Athens
