Pepe Nero
Top Moroccan-Italian dining in a beautiful riad (d; $$$)
One of Marrakesh's very best restaurants, Pepe Nero is run by a Moroccan-Italian chef (Moroccan mum, Italian dad). It has a double menu of fine Moroccan and Italian cuisine, and is housed in the beautiful Riyad al Moussika, once owned by Thami el Glaoui, which also offers rooms.
You dine here in one of two courtyards – one with a pool, the other with a tinkling fountain – or in a cosy adjoining salon. The decor is superb, and the ambience is just the right amount of intimate. To accompany your meal, there's a choice of Moroccan or Italian wines.
Pepe Nero has two menus – Moroccan and Italian – but you're free to pick and mix of course. So you could start, for example, with Moroccan salads or salmon tartare, follow with pigeon pastilla or home-made pasta of various sorts, have a main of John Dory tajine or duck in orange sauce, and round it off with Moroccan pastries or cassata (both della casa, obviously).
