Bab Taghzout
Former northern city gate - باب تغزوت
In case you’re wondering why there’s a city gate, Bab Taghzout, in the middle of the Medina rather than in the city wall, the answer is that originally this was a gate in the city wall.
Bab Taghzout marked the northern end of the Medina, and dates back to the city's foundation in the eleventh century, although it's no doubt been remodelled several times since then.
By 1760, the neighbourhood around the Zaouia of Sidi Bel Abbes had grown quite large and the Zaouia itself was well established on the Seven Saints route, so Sultan Mohammed III had the city walls extended to the north to include it, leaving Bab Taghzout inside the Medina.
