Patisseries & Sweets

Patisserie

There are three kinds of sweet and cake shops in Marrakesh.

Posh, Frenchified patisseries such as 16 Café and Patisserie des Princes sell creamy pastries, and sometimes fruit tarts or millefeuille (custard slice).

Sweet selection

Upmarket Moroccan patisseries such as Al Jawda sell dainty Moroccan pastries. The best are stuffed with almond paste, a particular favourite being the crescent shaped cornes de gazelle (“gazelle horns”).

The Belkabir and Duniya Patisseries do a less refined version of this type of patisserie. Amandine sells both French and Moroccan style pastries, and specializes in macaroons.

Finally there are rustic sweet shops such as the Bab Agnaou sweet shop, which sell sticky confections made with pastry, nuts, and lots of syrup. Again, it’s the nut-stuffed ones, such as the triangular briouat, which are the best.
