The Olympic Park
The leaning tower of Montreal & swimming
Built for the 1976 Olympics Montreal’s Olympic Park was originally much bigger, with a track and field area and a velodrome among the facilities that have now been re-purposed for neighbouring attractions.
The kernel of the complex that remains now centres on the giant Olympic Stadium which offers tours but otherwise only opens to host major sporting events, big concerts, trade-shows and the like. An adjacent outdoor esplanade offers another, smaller summer-only event space.
This leaves the landmark leaning Montreal Tower as the main year-round visitor attraction. It’s the world’s largest inclined structure (190 meters at 45º) and a funicular rides up to a tower observatory for spectacular city views.
A few sports facilities have also survived since the Olypmics and include a big swimming pool (with playful Sunday "Wibit" swimming events with inflatable obstacles aimed at kids) that's open to the public.
