1950-2000: Expo & Separatism
Expo & the Olympics
Though it was by no means a smooth ride, the Drapeau era - which lasted albeit with a three-year interruption until 1986 saw the city take it’s present shape. During the era the city assured its spot on the world stage with Expo 67 and with the 1976 Olympics. Both left a major infrastructural legacy on the city, including the construction of the Metro.
Sepratism
All this happened against a backdrop of increasing Francophone wealth and political engagement in Quebec.
This included terrorist attacks by French separatists which helped galvinize several changes in Canada’s attitude towards Quebec in an attempt to avoid its breakaway.
