Old Montreal
Old Montreal (Vieux Montreal) was originally named Ville-Marie by Montreal’s New France ancestors.
It's a touristy spot, no doubt, but it's not been overdone and there are plenty of locals to be found on the cobbled streets between centuries-old Nouvelle France structures.
The main focal point is Place Jacques Cartier which bustles with sightseers and pavement cafes and leads down to the banks of the St Lawrence river and the Old Port - home of the Montreal Science Centre.
Several cobbled streets run parallel to the water front, sport endless souvenir shops and join major landmarks like Bonsecours Market, Notre Dame de Bonsecours Chapel and Notre Dame Basilica.
