The Water of Leith
Edinburgh's riverside walk (1.5–7hrs)
Follow the Water of Leith 13 miles (20.5km) from the foot of Pentland Hills to its somewhat anticlimactic end at Leith's docks and you'll have done Edinburgh's great riverside walk. You’ll have seen impressive stone bridges, photogenic weirs and old mills; the odd heron, maybe even an otter; and enjoyed much pleasant greenery too.
But more than that, the Water of Leith walkway provides a great cross-section of the city: some stretches are a bit grimy, some boringly suburban, but overall it’s an excellent walk that would take at least 4hrs. This is a bit much for many, so zero in on the best bits.
The Water-of-Leith Wander itinerary will guide you to the prettiest urban stretch, but there are more options below.
