The five beaches between the Cherbourg Peninsula and Le Havre are where the Normandy landings took place on 6th June 1944, the success of which was crucial to the victory of the Allies in World War Two.

Utah Beach

Viewing the above map from West to East, the first beach was codenamed Utah and this was where the second main American attack took place. It involved the 4th US Infantry Division and the 70th Tank Battalion assisted by the 101st Airborne Division. All were successful and secured their area quickly with few losses.

Omaha Beach

Omaha is the most well known beach due to being featured in two movies Saving Private Ryan and The Longest Day. It was the the responsibility of the US 1st Infantry Division and the 29th Infantry Division.
