Red Beach, Santorini

Black & red volcanic pebbles

Red Beach

Despite its popularity Santorini isn’t a destination known for golden stretches of beaches.

However, some beaches are still a pull for visitors.

Red Beach is an unorganised beach ie: bring your own towel and expect no sunbeds plus its rocky, nevertheless its unique red and black volcanic hues do pull in the crowds, so viewing via a boat trip is also popular.

The Spring Fresco. Wall painting that was found in situ in Akrotiri, Santorini, National Archaeological Museum

Lovers of ancient Greek history can combine a trip to Red Beach and the nearby site of Akrotiri, an ancient Minoan settlement discovered in 1866 when soil on the island was being dug to be used to insulate the Suez Canal Bridge.

Transport You’ll need to have your own transport to this remote spot - a 6.4 mile drive from the main port of Santorini with parking at the top. It’s a bit of a hike down to the beach, so not necessarily good for people with mobility issues.
