Kavala
A secret gem of the north
A coastal city in Northern Greece about 150km from Thessaloniki and 180km from Halkidiki, Kavala rises up like an amphitheatre from its two ports and is split into the Palia Poli (Old Town) and Nea Poli (New Town).
Palia Poli
Most of the unique sights are to be seen here as it’s Nea Poli that houses most of Kaval’s residents.
The 15th century Kastro (Fortress) of Kavala, also known as the Acropolis of Kavala, is located on a peninsular in the Old Town and has been destroyed and re-built several times, showcasing Byzantine, Ottoman and Venetian architecture.
It’s an imposing building with a central circular tower that you can walk to the top from the inside to reward you with gorgeous views across the city and sea beyond. There’s also a guardhouse, and in the external enclosure there’s a modern open air theatre where several music and artistic events are held during the summer months.
You can also walk along the castle walls.
