Coyoacán & San Ángel
The southern neighborhood of Coyoacán has grown fast in recent years, too fast some might say, but it has managed to retain its charm as a bohemian enclave with colonial flavor.
Long popular with artists, Frida Kahlo lived in Coyoacán’s famous Casa Azul, which is now one of the city’s most visited museums. Meanwhile, Marxist revolutionary Leon Trotsky’s intriguing home-turned-museum is just a few blocks away but without the crowds.
The cobbled streets of nearby San Ángel show yet an even quieter side of the south with its tranquil plazas, old mansions and weekly crafts market known as the El Bazaar Sábado. Also, don’t miss Museo de El Carmen, a former temple and convent with a dozen mummies awaiting in the building’s crypt.
