The Elephant House

Cheerful busy cafe with great views (b,l,d; £)

Edinburgh - 123

Note cafe is currently closed for a short time pending cleanup of a fire elsewhere in the building - check elephanthouse.biz before going

Café whose bustle and castle views from the convivial back room are as much the attraction as the food. And you’ll likely have to share a table with visitors and gossiping students.

It’s certainly a laid-back hang-out that invites dawdling and perhaps even stimulates creativity – if J.K. Rowling is anything to go by. It was here that, as a hard-up single mum, she penned her first Harry Potter novel.

The Elephant House, Edinburgh

Good for coffee and tasty, homemade food – pizzas, quiches, pies, sandwiches and cakes.
