Machu Picchu’s Circuits
Routes around the ruins
Since 2021, visitors to Machu Picchu can only visit parts of the ruins on a single visit. When you buy your Machu Picchu ticket, or book with a tour company that will buy your ticket, you have to choose which route you’ll take through the llaqta – the Quechua word for town
The “llaqta” refers to the central part of the ruins, also called the citadel, where the temples and residential areas are. Extra options like Huayna Picchu, Huchuy Picchu, Inti Punku and the Inca bridge are not part of the llaqta.
There are currently 3 circuits, each with several routes/variations, confusingly producing a total of ten options. But most people buy a ticket for 2A, also called the “designed route.”
(Note: Routes 1C, 1D, 3C, and 3D are only available during high season.)
